Chapter 9: Arctic Grayling,
Dolly Varden/Arctic Char,
and
Northern Pike
The Arctic Grayling fishing can be extremely good in the clear, shallow, and rocky streams of the upper river systems. We believe that we have the best Arctic Grayling fishing in Alaska, possibly the world. Some of the clear water spawning streams where the Arctic Grayling live year-round have never been fished!
We have several streams that produce great Arctic Grayling fishing. One in particular, not only produces high numbers, but it also produces Arctic Grayling of a very large size.
Last summer we routinely caught many in the high teens in length, quite a few over 20 inches, and one that we had to put the tape to that measured 24 inches. Even the lodges in Canada, (where they do nothing but fish for Grayling), do not produce fish of this size, or more importantly, fish of this size combined with the numbers that we have.
| Arctic Grayling will at times hit almost any small dry fly. They also take egg pattern flies, especially after the salmon start to spawn. Small spinners work very well also. |
| |
| Arctic Grayling, though not large, put up an entertaining fight. They can be caught mixed in with the salmon, but in order to catch a lot of them, you will be required to walk up shallow and rocky streams while casting in the deeper pools, behind large boulders, and under overhanging banks. |
We have many miles of prime Grayling fishing in our area.
Dolly Varden/Arctic Char
| The Dolly Varden is a member of the Char family and in our local drainages, most are anadromous (sea-run fish). |
| Dolly Varden enter the rivers in early summer and migrate up the systems into smaller streams. They are found in the same general waters as the Rainbow Trout and are often caught while Rainbow fishing. In our area they prefer the clearer water and deeper holes that many streams offer. |
| The Dolly Varden generally grow to about 15 to 20 inches and several pounds, although we occasionally catch a few in the 8 to 12 lb. range. |
Northern Pike
| We catch Northern Pike in several lakes in our area. They are very aggressive and will hit almost any fly or lure. We usually use a mouse or shrew pattern, which seems to work all summer long. |
