Chapter 1:
General information about Lake Marie Lodge

We are an Alaska fly in fishing lodge offering fly fishing and spin fishing in remote alaska for salmon and rainbow trout. We concentrate our efforts on rainbow trout, king salmon (chinook), and silver salmon (coho). We fly fish and spin fish, and specialize in "sight fishing" for Alaska king salmon and for "surface fishing" for silver salmon. We are also the only lodge in the world to catch "king salmon on the surface using dry flies."

General information about Lake Marie Lodge

Lake Marie Lodge is located on 120 acres in a very private and remote area of Alaska. We are a fly-in lodge and are located about 90 air miles from Anchorage. It takes about 45 minutes of small plane flying time to reach us from Anchorage. Our location is our key to offering the world's best in small stream fishing. There are 7 different streams within 3 miles that salmon and rainbow trout run in. We fish these and many others in order to offer the very best wade fishing in Alaska. There's nothing in the world quite like "sight fishing" Alaska king salmon. To be able to see the kings in the clear water as they take your fly or lure is an experience that everyone should have.

The silver salmon (coho) fishing is equally thrilling in the clear water. We specialize in the use of dry flies (surface flies) in enticing the silver salmon to hit on the surface.

This is the ultimate in fly fishing. Silvers on the surface! If you want to see what we mean by "surface fishing" for silver salmon, click here, for an 8 second video clip. This is in window's media player format.

The rainbow trout fishing can only be described as awesome. These native rainbow trout follow the schools of salmon all summer and grow very fat on the spawned salmon eggs and later on decaying flesh.

They are so eager to eat that they even hit dries in the midst of gorging themselves on salmon eggs. We catch rainbows all summer long on dries, however the arctic grayling is the king of dry flies. Arctic grayling will rise on any day and at any time.

Our newest fishing adventure is catching King Salmon on the surface using floating or dry flies. Yes, King salmon (chinook) can be enticed to rise and strike on the surface! Over the course of the last several years, we had been developing and perfecting a technique to catch these huge fish on the surface. We previously thought that silver salmon on the surface was the ultimate fishing experience, however we have come to believe that the much larger king salmon is indeed the king sized ultimate fishing experience! Click here, for a ten second video showing a king salmon striking a surface fly, and watch the king's explosive reaction.

Our Mission
Our mission at Lake Marie Lodge is to provide the very best Rainbow Trout and Salmon fishing in Alaska. We have developed some of the very best areas to fish in Alaska and we have miles of secluded rivers, streams, and creeks in which you will not see another person. The fishing at Lake Marie Lodge is truly spectacular.

The Lodge

The three-story main lodge is located on a bluff overlooking Denali National Park and Preserve. The views of Mt. McKinley, (Denali) are incredible. Each Guest room has a large picture window (5ft x 6ft) to take advantage of these views.

Each room also has a balconey from which to take pictures or to just relax outside and enjoy the long daylight hours. Every guest room also has two queen size beds, and its own private bathroom. The great room features large glass windows that look out over the valley and into the mountains. Several glaciers can also be seen from the great room.

The Lodge's bedrooms are spacious and all have 2 queen-sized beds. They also all have private bathrooms with showers.
We also have daily maid service and laundry facilites on site.

While our main focus is Salmon and Rainbow Trout fishing, we have spent considerable time and effort developing several other related activities. These activities will add to your fishing experience. These activities can be enjoyed in the evening after fishing, or during the day, as a break from fishing. After several long days of catching fish, you might want to spend an afternoon, or evening, canoeing the quiet and secluded beaver streams near the Lodge. We have several other activities and facilities at the Lodge including a Fly tying area, Fly casting instructions, Hiking Trails, Berry Picking, Gold Panning, Bear and Wildlife Viewing Areas, Waterfowl Viewing Blind, Overnight Tent Camping, Canoeing, Kayaking, and Rafting. These activities offer a restful break from fishing.

The Fishing

We spin fish and fly fish for Rainbow Trout, King Salmon (Chinook), Silver Salmon (Coho), Sockeye Salmon (Reds), Chum Salmon, and Pink Salmon. We also catch Arctic Grayling, Dolly Varden/Arctic Char, and Northern Pike.

We concentrate our efforts on three main species:

Rainbow Trout

We have miles and miles of wadeable streams where you will catch Rainbow Trout in virtually every pool. We fish two streams in particular that are world class fly fishing rainbow streams, and you will be the only anglers there. These streams are fantastic and are virtually unknown to the world due to our remoteness and our area's settlement history. There were never any Alaska Native settlements in our area and also very limited exploration and development by outsiders, and therefore it has stayed one of Alaska's least populated regions. This remoteness is apparent in the Rainbow Trout as most have never seen a Fly or Lure, much less have been caught by one. They are not leader shy in the least so you do not have to be an experienced fly fishermen to catch them. If you wish, we can take you to fish an area that no one has ever fished before, as we are always looking to explore new areas. For more information on Rainbow Trout, visit our Rainbow Trout web page, and our Fly Fishing web page.

King Salmon (Chinook)

Our King Salmon fishing is very unique due to our unusual location and remoteness. We fish for the Kings in small streams and pools rather than in large rivers. You will fish in pools where there are hundreds of King Salmon that you can see. You can catch a variety of sizes averaging 30 lbs., with large ones in the 60's. We have King Salmon returning to our creeks that are chrome bright and as the season progresses the coloration slowly changes to red. Because of our location and remoteness, we have also developed techniques for catching large King Salmon on very light gear (4-6 lb Tippet and line), and have broken many world records. For more information on King Salmon, visit our King Salmon web page, and also our Fly Fishing web page.

Silver Salmon (Coho)

Few fish can match the acrobatics of the Silver Salmon. The thrill of hooking and fighting many Silver Salmon in a single day is not to be missed. You will have the opportunity to fish a different stream or creek every day of your stay, which allows you to a have a varied fishing experience, instead of having to fish the same stream every day. Silver Salmon are very aggressive and bite very well, and once on the line, they are extremely fun and exciting to play. Have you ever had a chrome bright silver salmon rise up and take your floating fly right off of the surface of the water? It's very hard to describe the excitement of having salmon hitting on the surface, very similar to 5-8 pound rainbows rising up and taking your dry. We are very experienced in surface fishing for all species of salmon. There really isn't another fishing experience like the Silver Salmon experience. For more information on Silver Salmon, visit our Silver Salmon web page, and also our Fly Fishing web page.

There are two factors which sets our operation apart from any others.

We only take a limited number of Guests. We limit ourselves to only averaging about 8-10 Guests, although we have the ability to handle groups up to 18. Our operation is centered around you, and how we can provide the best overall fishing experience possible. We don't see how an operation carrying 30-40 Guests can center their efforts around an individual and provide him, or her, with great fishing. In the future, if we decide to expand, we would rather build another lodge and fishing operation than doubling our current size. Doubling our current size would certainly defeat the concept of providing individual and personal service.

Our Location. We are located in an area where three river systems come together, each having several creeks and streams running into them. Because we have access to a variety of fishing areas, you are assured of the very best fishing opportunities. Please take a minute to consider the following:

* There are 3 major river systems within 3 miles, (2 within 1 mile).

* There are 7 streams within 3 miles that Salmon run, (4 within 1 1/4 miles).

* Within a 20 mile radius of Lake Marie Lodge, Salmon run in 5 major lakes, 8 rivers, and over 35 streams.

 About this Web Site

This web site is designed to provide detailed information about fishing at Lake Marie Lodge, and Alaska fishing in general. It is designed similar to a book, with chapters. It is organized to be viewed from the top of the Table Of Contents (Located on the Home Page), to the bottom of the Table of Contents. You do not have to view it this way, however, and may instead go straight to a particular topic of interest. We have tried to include as much information about the operation of Lake Marie Lodge as possible and about fishing in Alaska in general. Many of the pictures were selected, not only for the fish, but for the creek or stream in the background. By paying particular attention to the backgrounds you can see the various types of water you will be fishing in.

Some of the web pages are long and will take a few minutes to download, but the wait is definitely worth it if you wish to learn more about Fishing in Alaska, and Lake Marie Lodge in particular.
