A Typical Day of Fishing

Your fishing day actually starts the night before when you sit down with the guides to develop a plan for the following day. Several factors that are considered include; which species your group would like to catch (Rainbow, Salmon, Grayling...), water conditions, what type of fishing (wading, stream fishing, sight fishing, boat fishing, bank fishing, or hike in), which areas have been productive the last couple of days, and how much effort your group would like to expend (from extreme remote hike in to fishing near the boat landing).
Also decided, is what time your group would like to get up and eat breakfast. After several days of early risings, some Guests prefer to sleep in a little. Because of our smaller lodge size, it is easier for us to accommodate any changes that your group might have.
One of many options, is to head out in the boats upriver to fish a couple of streams there, such as the picture to the right.

This section of water has great views of Denali.

Also discussed as an option is the separating of a group, each going to a different location to fish.

You may head out on our trails behind the lodge to fish the streams back there.

This area is very remote!

Part of a group might want a hike-in trip which might be too strenuous for other members, or several members might wish to return to a particular creek while the others might want to fish a new area. Again, this is possible because of our smaller operation. With an average of about 14 Guests, we are much more able to accommodate any changes than a lodge who runs 30-50 Guests. We try harder to provide individualized fishing and more personal service than most other lodges.

We usually eat breakfast at 7:00 am and you are off fishing by 8:00. You might be catching rainbows with mouse patterns by 8:15 (shown at left) or you might be after salmon. It's up to you!
Lunch is carried by the Guide and usually consists of sandwiches, chips, drinks, snacks, and cookies. You are certainly welcome to come back to the lodge for a hot lunch, however you are not required to do this, as this would limit your fishing time.

Many times the Guides also prepare your fresh caught salmon for you on the riverbank. This is always a great treat. It may range from a simple fillet to more elaborate full meals. There's nothing better than a fresh caught salmon fillet, seasoned to perfection, and eaten on the bank of a wild Alaska river.

Fresh salmon is sometimes cooked on the riverbank, (depending on fire conditions), as an extra course for lunch.

It may be as simple as a hot steaming fresh salmon fillet sprinkled with our "Lake Marie Secret Spices" as the picture at the left shows, or it may have all the extras, such as potatoes, onions, topped with lemon slices and our secret spices. (picture below)

After lunch, it's back to fishing! Maybe continue with going for salmon, or change rods and go for the rainbows. Perhaps it's time for dry flies with the Arctic Grayling.

Of course there no reason you can't take a break from the fishing action to enjoy the remoteness of Alaska.

Sometimes even a short afternoon nap on the riverbank is "just what the doctor ordered."

You'll be revived and ready to fish after a nap!

After a long day of catching fish, you usually pack up the gear and head back to the lodge for dinner at about 6:00 pm. Dinner is served at 7:00 pm.

After dinner, we have evening activities at the lodge, or you may go out again for some of our evening fishing. You are allowed to fish as often and as much as you like. We don't hold you to a rigid fishing schedule, so you are able to fish when you like.

Evening Fishing! It's a great time to catch fish, as they usually start biting good again in the evening.

It's also a great time to watch the wildlife come out, such as the beavers, otters, and bears.

Other evening activities include some Skeet shooting, with Denali in the background, and also horseshoes is a great favorite.

Other options during the day include; coming back to the lodge early for a rest and then going out again about 4:00 pm, or resting a little at the lodge in the morning and heading out to fish at lunch time or later. The fishing schedule is left up to the Guest. We do not have a rigid schedule that you must follow.
